How we use AI

We use artificial intelligence in a small number of places on this site. This page explains exactly where, so you always know what you are reading and who you are talking to.

Frans, our AI assistant

Frans is the chat assistant in the corner of this site. It is a computer program, not a person. It uses a large language model to answer questions about our work, about how to recognise exploitation, and about where to turn for help.

Frans is told this at the start of every conversation, and every answer is labelled. That is a legal requirement under Article 50 of the EU AI Act, which has applied since 2 August 2026 — and it is also simply the right thing to do.

What Frans will not do

  • It cannot take a report. If you need to report something, use the contacts below or your local police.
  • It does not assess your situation. Frans gives general information. It does not decide who gets help, and it does not judge how serious anything is.
  • It does not give legal or medical advice.
  • It does not ask for personal details, and if you share them it will not repeat them back.

What happens to what you write

Your message is sent to our own server, which passes it to a model provider to generate an answer. We do not require you to log in, we do not link the conversation to you, and we do not use these conversations to train any model. We keep only what is needed to keep the service running and to stop abuse, and no longer than 30 days.

Please still avoid writing names, addresses, phone numbers or other details that could identify a child or yourself. If you need to give that kind of information to someone, give it to the police or social services — not to a chat window.

AI-generated and AI-assisted text

Some articles on this site are drafted or translated with AI help. Wherever that is the case you will see a label:

  • ✦ AI-assisted · edited by a person — a person wrote or substantially rewrote the text, with AI helping along the way.
  • ✦ AI-generated · reviewed by an editor — the text was mostly produced by AI, then read and approved by a person before it was published.

Text with no label was written by a person. The same information is also embedded in the page in a machine-readable form so that search engines and provenance tools can detect it.

Images

We never publish photographs of identifiable children who have been affected by exploitation. Where an image is an illustration, a staged photograph with models, or AI-generated, it is marked as such.

A person, always

If you would rather speak to a person, email us at team@marianco.org or use our contact form. Nothing on this site requires you to talk to a machine.

If a child is in danger right now

Something wrong?

If Frans said something incorrect or unhelpful, or if you think a page is missing an AI label, please tell us at team@marianco.org. We read every report and we would rather hear about it than not.
