Marianco: Championing a Safer Future for Vulnerable Children

Marianco works against the trafficking and sexual exploitation of children. It is a small organisation in its first year, and this article says what that means in practice rather than what it hopes to mean later.

Francisco Padilla grew up on the streets of Cartagena, Colombia, and started Marianco because of it. The organisation works against child trafficking, the commercial sexual exploitation of children, and child sexual abuse material. Those are the correct terms and the reason for using them is not pedantry: a child cannot sell sex and a child cannot consent, so the older words describe a transaction that does not exist and hide a crime that does.

The Global Crisis of Child Exploitation

Child trafficking, pedophilia, and related forms of exploitation remain some of the most pressing issues facing the world today. These violations strip millions of children of their rights, safety, and dignity, leaving long-lasting scars on their lives and communities.

According to UNICEF, nearly 1.2 million children are trafficked globally each year, forced into labor, prostitution, and other forms of abuse. Alarming figures from the International Labour Organization reveal that 1 in 4 victims of modern slavery is a child. Many are exploited in silence, their suffering hidden from public view and justice systems.

Child sexual abuse material also continues to rise, driven by the dark web and by protective mechanisms that have not kept up. The term matters: calling it pornography implies a performer who agreed, and there is no such person in it. For example, INTERPOL has reported a sharp increase in cases of online child exploitation, with offenders targeting younger and more vulnerable victims.

These numbers represent real children, each with a story of lost innocence and stolen futures. Marianco recognizes the urgency of addressing this crisis and is committed to disrupting these cycles of exploitation. By raising awareness, advocating for stricter laws, and creating prevention and rehabilitation programs, we aim to protect children from harm and offer them the chance to heal and thrive.

Short-Term Goals:

• Raise Awareness: Launch targeted campaigns to educate the public about the realities of child trafficking, pedophilia, and related issues.

• Build Partnerships: Collaborate with like-minded organizations, advocacy groups, and governmental agencies to expand our reach and impact.

• Fundraising: Mobilize resources to support the implementation of advocacy and prevention programs.

Long-Term Goals:

• Develop Rehabilitation Centers: Establish safe spaces where rescued children can heal, grow, and rebuild their lives.

• Offer Legal Aid: Provide legal support for victims, ensuring justice and protection for those affected.

• Create Educational Programs: Empower children and their communities through access to education and vocational training to break cycles of vulnerability.

Upcoming Initiatives

Marianco is preparing a campaign about how recruitment actually works and where a concern should go. The aim is narrow on purpose: an adult who can recognise grooming and knows which number to call is worth more than an adult who has been told the problem is serious.

Most of this is still ahead of us. Marianco has no outcome figures to publish yet, and it will not publish any it cannot document.
